Following his Hall of Fame baseball career with the Brooklyn/Los Angeles Dodgers the late Don Drysdale embarked on a very successful career as a sports broadcaster. In fact after nearly nine years broadcasting professional baseball games for four different MLB teams Drysdale was hired to be a TV broadcaster for ABC Sports. From 1978 to 1986 he served in that capacity not only doing baseball telecasts but also providing on-site commentary for the popular Superstars competition as well as Wide World of Sports. It was during this time that he met his second wife Ann Meyers a former All-American womens basketball player at UCLA who was a frequent competitor on the Superstars and the events three-time womens champion.
This lot features the actual ABC Sports on-air blue sport coat that Drysdale donned during that time. Drysdale stood 6 5 tall so the silk-lined wool jacket is certainly built for a large man. Custom-tailored by Stodwell Ltd. out of New York and London the jacket shows considerable wear and still bears the embroidered ABC Sports patch Drysdale wore on his left breast pocket. A classic worn sports item from a man who seemingly covered them all.
