The 1988 Major League Baseball season was a memorable one for the Los Angeles Dodgers as they were picked to finish fourth in the N.L. West standings but wound up winning the World Series. They beat the heavily favored New York Mets in the N.L.C.S. and the Oakland Athletics in the Fall Classic. Kirk Gibson carried the Dodgers offense winning the N.L. Most Valuable Player Award while Orel Hershiser dominated on the mound throwing a record 59 consecutive scoreless innings on his way to winning the N.L. Cy Young Award. Hershisers unbelievable streak snapped the record of another Dodgers great Don Drysdale who had set the previous scoreless innings mark back in 1968.
Drysdale following his Hall of Fame career had established himself as a baseball radio broadcaster and was actually in his first year in that capacity with the Dodgers organization in 1988. This lot features the beautifully designed 14K gold ring that Drysdale was awarded following the teams sixth World Series championship. A genuine .75 carat diamond rests at the center of a blue stone at face encircled by 20 smaller diamonds while embossed lettering "Dodgers/World Champions/1988" border the top of the ring. The left shank features the "LA" logo beneath his surname Drysdale with the right shank picturing a World Series trophy beneath the teams name "Dodgers" in script. The ring measures to a size 8.5 and presents in NRMT-MT condition inside its original wooden engraved ring box "LA Dodgers 1988 World Champions" thats lined in blue velvet. The 40 gram ring reads LGB14K on the inside band.
