This enormous approximately 64-by-70-inch football blanket was presented to USC Trojans All-American guard Johnny Baker for his participation in the December 27 1930 East-West Shrine All-Star Football Game won by the West 3-0. Baker earned varsity letters at USC 1929-1931. He played in the 1930 and the 1932 Rose Bowl each game won by USC kicking five points after touchdowns. He kicked the winning 33-yard field goal with one minute to go in USC's game against the Notre Dame in 1931. It was the Trojans' first ever victory in South Bend. Baker was an All-America selection in 1930 and '31 and was elected to the College Football Hall of Fame in 1983. The heavy wool blanket is breathtaking in its enormity and pristine condition after 85 years. Cream colored with light tan and dark blue hemmed borders it has rounded edges and a 22-inch cardinal red section sewn to one corner with "University of Southern California" embroidered in a gold. A 12-inch in diameter East-West All-Star Game chenille patch at the center is similarly startling in its pristine condition. With delicate embroidery in patriotic colors it features the East-West shield encircled by a blue border with red and silver trim that states "Century of Progress Football Game." The blanked has a black "O'Shea Knitting Mills of Chicago" tag on the inside near the top left corner. As noted the condition of the blanket remarkable. No holes or moth damage whatsoever. It should be noted that a similar East-West Shrine Game blanket sold for $1220 in our Spring 2015 Premier Auction.
