David Ortiz affectionately known as "Big Papi" across the MLB landscape nearly single-handedly brought the Red Sox back from the dead (down three games to zero) in the 2004 ALCS against the vaunted New York Yankees. Not only did the Bosox win the American League pennant that year but they went on to win the World Series by sweeping the St. Louis Cardinals in four straight games. It marked the first Fall Classic win for Boston in 86 years. Ortiz is now in the midst of his farewell season in 2016 but based on his astonishing production he appears to be at the height of his career. Papi is poised to leave the game with the greatest final season performance of any player in history before he hangs it up and waits for his call from the Hall.
This lot features a coveted piece of Ortiz's uniform from that magical 2004 season his actual signed inscribed and game-worn Boston Red Sox home jersey from a regular-season game played on June 22 2004 against the Minnesota Twins. In what turned out to be a 9-2 victory for the home team Ortiz led the way by going 3-for-5 with a solo home run in the bottom of the first inning. The Russell Athletic snow white jersey with Red Sox red piping running down the front the jersey and continuing around the neck boasts "RED SOX" across the front in red tackle twill outlined in navy blue. Proper Russell Athletic manufacturer's tagging exists on the left front tail next to a separate sewn-on year tag reading "2004." The reverse of the jersey has Ortiz's trademark uniform number "34" in large red tackle twill numerals outlined in navy blue. The official MLB embroidered logo rests on the outside of the rear collar. He has signed and inscribed the back of the jersey in black marker with the following text: "David Ortiz 34 Game Use 2004 HR 16 06/22/04." The jersey features a hologram from ASI on the back number. Getty image #51072511 provides a detailed image of Ortiz from the game on 6/22/04 and all comparable elements of this jersey visible in that image appear to be an exact match.
When you consider that this is a home jersey from the most epic season of his career and Home Run jersey to boot this has to be considered one of the best Big Papi jersey's you could hope for.
