Longtime ace Dave Stewart shined when it mattered most: October. A 20-game winner four straight years for his hometown Oakland A’s (1987-90), “Smoke” started the ’89 All-Star Game for the American League and later that year was named MVP of the 1989 Fall Classic (Bay Bridge Series). The three-time World Series champ also took home MVP honors in the 1990 and ’93 ALCS, respectively. “Stew” got his final ring with the Toronto Blue Jays in ’93, retiring with 168 career victories along with 10 playoff wins and an impressive 2.77 postseason ERA.
1989 was Stewart’s most accomplished season. He went 21-9 with a 3.32 ERA to finish second in the A.L Cy Young voting and then went a perfect 4-0 in his four postseason starts for the A’s. First, he shut down the Blue Jays in the ALCS, winning Game 1 and the Game 5 clincher. Next, he hurled a complete-game shutout in Game 1 of the World Series. Then, after the tragic Loma Prieta Earthquake postponed the series, Stew pitched seven strong to win Game 3, setting up Oakland’s sweep over the Giants and locking up the MVP award.
For his herculean efforts in the "Battle of the Bay," Stewart was specially awarded this full-size 1989 World Series Championship trophy, the same size as the one presented by the Commissioner to the winning team after every Fall Classic). The magnificent award, which stands 25” tall by 12” wide and weighs 44 lbs. overall including the display stand, boasts 26 gold-plated flag pennants representing all 26 teams in the Major Leagues at that time. The large circular black base includes a gold-plated placard band around the perimeter that reads “OAKLAND "1989 WORLD SERIES CHAMPIONSHIP TROPHY - Made for Dave Stewart, Member of the 1989 Oakland Athletics" on the front. On the back side of this same band is "COPYRIGHT 1983 COMMISSIONER OF BASEBALL" in the same black font. Centered upon the base of the trophy is a large circular golden arch with a decorative king’s crown on top and a shiny brass baseball resting on the bottom. Directly in front of the ball is a raised pair of lovely enameled A's and Giants World Series press pins. The entire trophy, which comes in great condition overall with some rusting mainly to the team flags, is supported underneath by a huge display stand (16x18x8) lined in elegant red velvet, a customized presentation never before seen for a World Series trophy.
Now, to address the word "REPLICA" on the front placard. We were told that Dave Stewart, because he was named World Series MVP, was the only 1989 A's player to recieve a full-size version of the "Commissioner's Trophy." The rest of his teammates got the standard "13-tall mini-size player trophy. We can only presume that the maker, Balfour, used the term replica to simply imply that it was an additional full-size trophy made for a member of the team. Records show that several championship squads in the past have issued a separate Commissioner's Trophy to the MVP of the World Series, including the 1972 A's. In fact, we sold that exact one awarded to Oakland's Gene Tenace for over $30K. His example does not say "replica" but it also doesn't mention his name either. We firmly stand behind this as Stew's one and only '89 World Series MVP trophy, and it comes straight from his personal collection.
Includes LOA signed by Dave Stewart (printed in B&W and signed in black pen).
