The 1970's were filled with dissapointment for Yankees fans and players alike. The golden goose of baseball history had become a laughing stock in the major leagues and their glory days of yesteryear were a distant memory. The Yankees didn't win anymore and it was becoming a cultural crisis for the club. By the time 1976 rolled around the Bronx Bombers had made their way back into the championship conversaiont, albeit they got crushed by the Big Red Machine that year. The team rebounded the following season and saw themselves back in the fall classic in back to back seasons in what seemed like an eternity for the club and the loyal fans. This time would be different, however and the Yankees would win the whole thing, bringing back the pride and joy that the pinstriped faithful were accustomed to. Led by the bat of Reggie Jackson and the pitching of Sparky Lyle, Mike Torrez and Ron Guidry, the 1977 Yankees took care of the L.A. Dodgers to claim the throne of the major leagues. Cliff Johnson was the DH and back up first basemand and batted a gaudy .400 in the ALCS against the Kansas City Royals to help the club move onto the World Series. A homerun and 2 RBI helpe the team prevail in the decisive 5th game of the series. His role was quite diminished in the fall classic but Johnson's contribution sto the team's getting there can't be overlooked.
Featured is Cliff Johnson's World Series trophy awarded to him after the team's success in the fall classic. The trophy is fashioned on a 7-inch diameter black base. he base is bronze-banded with the inscription “WORLD SERIES CHAMPIONS NEW YORK YANKEES 1977 CLIFF JOHSON.” Thirty bronze mini flagpoles topped with the names of each of the 26 MLB teams (AL on the left, NL on the right, alphabetical order) on a pennant rise from the base. The size of press pins, both a Yankees’ entwined “NY” metal insignia in blue and bronze along with a metal Dodgers’ logo in blue, bronze, red and white are fastened to the base. Amid the encircling mini flagpoles sits a bronze ring, anchored with a silver baseball and topped with a gold crown. The trophy is in excellent condition and comes with a Letter from Cliff Johnson.
