What a classic photo of the UCLA Bruins football team circa early 1940's! By this point the star-studded all-black backfield that included Jackie Robinson Kenny Washington and Woody Strobe had all left campus. This team was led by star quarterback and future Pro Football Hall of Fame member Bob Waterfield (seated wearing #7 2nd row from bottom 2nd from right). Waterfield played for the Bruins in 1941 1942 and 1944 and this photo is most likely the 1941 or 1942 squad coached by Edwin Horrell (standing 3rd row from bottom 2nd from left). The 1942 UCLA team won the Pacific Coast Conference and played in the program's first Rose Bowl a loss to Georgia.
This black and white photo measuring 12.5" by 20" is in moderate condition. There are some creases and tears mostly on the edges. The photographer is Don Milton of Beverly Hills. The photo was acquired from a storage unit that belonged to relatives of A.J. Sturzenegger an assistant coach with UCLA from 1925-1948. "Sturzy" as he was called is pictured in the left corner of the 3rd row next to Coach Horrell who is wearing a UCLA team sweater.
