Very rare circa 1880's tintype with crystal clear perfect photographic image of 3 year major league veteran Patsy Cahill. Cahill is seen in full uniform sitting on a chair while holding a bat and cute little dog in a studio. Uniform has a white top with dark pants and white socks. He is holding a cap with white looking star on top with dark button. John Francis Patrick (Patsy) Cahill primarily and outfielder played in the major leagues for 3 seasons - in 1884 for the Columbus Buckeyes of the American Association then in 1886 for the St. Louis Maroons and 1887 for Indianapolis Hoosiers both in the National League. Cahill is pictured on 2 cards in the 1887-90 N172 Old Judge tobacco issue while playing with Indianapolis. Some speculate that Cahill was the player who inspired Ernest Lawrence Thayer's famous baseball poem "Casey at the Bat" after Thayer working for the San Francisco Examiner reportedly saw Cahill play in Stockton California. Tintype was purchased by consignor many years ago and at that time it was identified to him as Cahill. In comparing the photo with available images of Cahill we believe they appear to match up. Photo is housed in a thermoplastic case. Tintypes like these provide an incredible look into the early beginnings of baseball.
