Muhammad Ali, then fighting under his given name, Cassius Clay, had just turned pro when he signed this piece for a fan. After winning the Gold in the heavyweight class at the 1960 Rome Olympics, Clay fought two professional bouts, both victories. In 1961, he fought and won eight times, followed by six more victories in 1962. These early fights put Cassius Clay in a position to be awarded the title bout against Sonny Liston in early 1964. This early signed note, written in blue ballpoint pen, reads, “From Cassius Clay World Olympic Boxing Champion 19-60 Best of Luck NEXT 19-61 CHAMPION 19-62.” The cut is mounted to cardstock that measures 4 ½” x 7 ¼” and is augmented by a small portrait photo of Clay. The piece comes with a LOA from JSA.
