When Ray Chapman was killed by a Carl Mays pitch during the 1920 season the Cleveland Indians called up a young college kid by the name of Joe Sewell to replace him. Sewell was not only able to fill Chapman’s big shoes but his .318 average helped the Tribe win the 1920 World Series. Over a 14-year career Sewell established himself as one of the best third baseman in the American League averaging .318. He was also known for his dependability holding the second spot for most consecutive games played a milestone that was surpassed by Lou Gehrig in the 1930’s.

This pair of cleats was worn by the Hall of Fame during the late 1920’s and early 30’s seasons spent with the Indians and then the Yankees starting in ‘31. The cleats show a ton of game use with the leather worn and scuffed from use. The area by the big toe on the left cleat has worn through and there is plenty of grass stains and infield residue throughout. The bottoms have the classic metal spikes silent reminders of how dangerous it was to man an infield spot during baseball’s Golden Era. The cleats do not have any manufacturer or size labels.

Includes LOA signed by Joe Sewell himself.
