Former MLB slugger Don Baylor spent 19 years in the major leagues where he competed for six different American League clubs. His longest stint with one team came when he suited up for the then-California Angels. From 1977 through 1982 Baylor donned the Halos uniform and launched 156 of his 338-career round-trippers. During this time frame Baylor enjoyed his finest season on record: 1979 when he hit 39 jacks drove in a league-leading 138 runs and walked away with the A.L. MVP Award.
This lot features a pair of game-worn California Angels items from Baylor during that time. The first is an Angels’ single-flap batting helmet (size 7 3/8) that Baylor also signed and inscribed in silver marker “1979 AL MVP.” The helmet exhibits plenty of game use including a small crack near the ear flap and has “BAYLOR” printed on its brim in black dyno tape. The helmet’s is missing portions of the inner support head band and the flap padding. The second item is a well-worn New Era Pro Model California Angels baseball cap that includes Baylor’s uniform number “25” written in black marker under the brim. Extensive wear is evident with multiple areas of staining and at least a dozen or so holes appear in the blue wool dome.
Includes letter of provenance from previous owner who did charity work with Baylor and the Angels. Helmet includes COA from PSA/DNA (U77398). Cap is pre-certified.
