Addendum: Updated description. This jersey is believed to have been worn after the 1970 World Cup during international play. Pele's final game in a Brazil jersey was July 18 1971.
Although he was born into poverty Brazilian soccer legend Pelé managed to turn things around by signing his first professional soccer contract at the age of 15 with the Santos FC. The following year he joined the Brazil National Football Team. During his prolific international career he won three FIFA World Cups (1958 1962 and 1970) being the only player ever to do so and remains the all-time leading goal scorer for Brazil with 77 career goals in 91 games.
This lot features Pele’s autographed and game worn Brazil National Team jersey worn circa 1970-71 during international competition. The jersey originates as part of a personal collection from Brazil’s former team masseur who served in that capacity from 1970 to 1994. The extremely soiled yellow-with-green-ribbed-sleeves cotton pullover jersey includes a “CBD” embroidered patch over the left chest area as well as Pele’s name and trademark uniform number “10” in green tackle twill on the back. The acronym CBD stands for the “Confederação Brasileira de Desportos” (Brazilian Sport Confederation) predecessor of the Brazilian Football Confederation the governing body for soccer in Brazil. Proper “ATHLETA” manufacturer’s tagging appears on the inside rear collar. Heavy game wear is evident with sweat stains throughout the jersey. Pelé signed the front of the jersey in black fiber-tip marker just below the green-trimmed collar.
Includes LOA from MEARS graded perfect A10. Letter of provenance from daughter of the former Brazilian National Team's masseur. Full LOA from JSA for autograph. Pre-certified by PSA/DNA.
