On February 20, 1962, the United States officially matched the Soviet Union’s space achievements when Astronaut John Glenn successfully orbited the Earth. The culmination of the Friendship 7 mission was the successful recovery of the spacecraft and John Glenn after splashing down in the North Atlantic. This Type 1 photograph captures this remarkable milestone when Friendship 7 was hauled aboard the destroyer USS Noa. The front of the photo has a NASA catalog number printed in the upper right border. The corners show some rounding, but nothing that encroaches on the image. The reverse of the photo has the printed NASA caption and credits. The photo has been graded Type 1 Authentic and encapsulated by PSA.
