Southpaw Tommy Byrne had the distinction of having not one but two tenures with the New York Yankees. Byrne’s first stint was from 1949 to 1951 when the Yanks were on their way to five straight World Series. Midway through the '51 season Byrne was traded to the last place St. Louis Browns and later spent a year between the White Sox and Senators. Redemption came in 1954 when Byrne returned to Casey Stengel's club to again don the pinstripes and the lefty figured prominently on a team that won three straight pennants and another World Series in '56. This Yankees cap was worn by Tommy Byrne during his later stint in the Bronx 1954 to ‘57.
The timeless Yankees navy blue cap shows tremendous game use. There are many turf and perspiration stains throughout along with a few holes most noticeably on the right side where the brim meets the body. There are loose threads throughout but the white stitched “NY” logo remains solid and secure. The underside of the brim shows staining and fading and the sweatband and inside of the crown show perspiration marks. The McAuliffe label is still sewn inside the sweatband. A true gamer if there ever was one with rock solid attribution to a 3-time World Series champ.
Includes letter of provenance from the Byrne family.
