If you were a Red Sox fan back in the 1950s and 60s this is the banner you did not want to see flying outside Fenway Park for this stunning 4’ x 6’ banner bearing the famous hat and bat logo meant the dreaded New York Yankees were coming to town. This banner was one of a set that were hung near the entrance on Jersey Street (later re-named Yawkey Way) during each visit to Fenway by American League teams. The banner was sourced from famed Red Sox chief groundskeeper Joe Mooney in the early 1970's. The consignor has detailed the whole backstory in a handwritten letter.

The double-sided banner is constructed of heavy-weight cotton canvas with the famed Yankees logo in white and red cloth embroidered to the navy base. “NEW YORK” is stitched at the top of both sides of the banner in 5 1/2” white letters. The banner has a heavy-duty rope and loop running along the top edge for mounting. As this was an exterior piece the banner shows heavy use. There are several tears in the base fabric many of which have been repaired. The Yankees logo has come loose in several spots and there is some staining fount throughout. The colors show slight fading overall and the white fabric pieces have toning from age. A very imposing and unique piece that dates to the time when the New York Yankees ruled the sports world.

Letter of provenance from consignor.
