Thumbing through the Baseball Encyclopedia were being nostalgic here and encountering the Moe Berg entry probably wouldnt give the reader pause to linger. Only a journeyman catcher despite playing 15 major-league seasons from 1923-39 Moe Berg is nonetheless an important figure in MLB and U.S. history occupying a unique niche in the historical record. Berg a graduate of Princeton University and Columbia Law School spoke several languages and was dubbed by none other than Casey Stengel as The strangest man ever to play baseball. Coming from Ole Casey thats high praise indeed. Berg would gain considerable post-baseball notoriety for his service to the U.S. Government as a spy in Eastern Europe during World War II including intelligence work in Yugoslavia and later interviewing a cadre of physicists to help determine how far along Germany was in getting The Bomb. With that kind of introduction the pants in question take on an additional significance. Worn in his penultimate year with the Red Sox before retiring from MLB and launching a new career so to speak the pants are an important artifact from a key historical figure. Moe Berg is embroidered in red alongside a Spalding label at the waist the pants show incredible game use including dirt and staining front and back plus significant team repairs. They are problem-free and without indication of any alteration save only for the team repairs mentioned before. This is an amazing museum-worthy treasure that captures the imagination much the way the former backstop managed to do as he blazed a clandestine trail in the earliest years of the CIA. Try putting that on the back of a baseball card!
