Sometime during the 1936-1937 seasons, a boy named Fred Rubin assembled a makeshift scrapbook in which he collected the signatures of the greatest players in the American League. Rubin carefully pasted the clipped newspaper portraits of all the stars and set about having the actual players autograph them. Of course, the scrapbook is heavy on the Yankees, with outstanding black fountain pen examples of Lou Gehrig and Lefty Gomez plus a terrific early Joe DiMaggio on an action shot of him in the midst of a leaping catch. Washington Senators catcher and fellow Hall of Famer Wes Ferrell has also signed this book twice. Among the tough signatures, Rubin obtained is that of Johnny Broaca, a college phenom who appeared to be an up-and-coming star before he abruptly quit the game and became a recluse, making his autograph hard to find today. Another “could have been” in this collection is Cecil Travis, the Senators star whose Hall of Fame-track career was derailed when his feet were frostbitten during WWII. The rest of the signatures in this unique scrapbook include Yankees Bump Hadley, Johnny Schulte, Spud Chandler, Tommy Henrich, Don Heffner, Joe Glenn, Johnny Murphy, and Red Rolfe; Senators Rick Ferrell, Buddy Lewis, Fred Sington (2), Ossie Bluege, Pete Appleton, Bucky Jacobs (2), Jimmie DeShong, Joe Kuhel, Syd Cohen, Monte Weaver, Wally Millies, Ken Chase and Mike Martin (?); and Tigers pitcher Doc Logan. A wonderful collection of the signatures of some of the greatest players of the 1930s presented in a visually unique scrapbook. This piece comes with an LOA from PSA/DNA for the signature authenticity.
