Offered here is a remarkably early and heavily used baseball attributed to a spring exhibition contest between the New York Yankees and Brooklyn Dodgers at Ebbets Field, circa 1932, signed by a small group of players from the game including a bold, sweeping autograph from Yankees legend Lou Gehrig and a second signature from standout outfielder and future Hall of Fame manager Lefty O'Doul, along with additional period signatures that have faded with the ball's age and honest, heavily-used condition. The ball itself shows extensive game wear consistent with its era — dark, uneven toning, scuffing, and exposed patches along the horsehide — the kind of well-loved condition typical of baseballs actually used in play during the early 1930s rather than pulled fresh from a box for autographs alone. Exhibition and barnstorming games between American and National League clubs were tremendously popular draws in the early twentieth century, offering fans a rare chance to see stars like Gehrig up close outside of the regular season, and signed artifacts surviving from this specific brand of game are exceptionally scarce nearly a century later. Accompanied by a PSA/DNA Letter of Authenticity for the autograph content, this ball represents a wonderfully early and tangible piece of Lou Gehrig material for any pre-war baseball or Yankees collection.
