Though the 1931 MLB season had ended, the year wasn’t over for Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig. On October 4, the Yankees legends crossed the Hudson River to West New York, NJ where they suited up for an exhibition game. Ruth joined the Fort Lee team as the “Babe Ruth’s Universal Stars” and Gehrig joined the West New Yorks. Over 8,000 packed into Miller Stadium for the game, won by West New York 7-4 and included homers by Ruth and Gehrig. This crystal clear Type 1 photo shows promotor Christy Walsh along with Ruth and Gehrig and their temporary teammates from the West New Yorks club. This great team photo features an atmospheric city background. Miller Stadium is still used today and was one of the locations for Bruce Springsteen’s video for “Glory Days” – a phrase certainly used by the guys in this picture when they looked back on the game back in 1931 when they got to play alongside Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig. The photo shows toning throughout and edge wear which includes some creasing, however none of this affects the striking team image. The back of the photo carries the Christy Walsh stamp and shows toning from age throughout. One of the best Ruth and Gehrig barnstorming images in the hobby. The photo has been encapsulated and graded a Type 1 by PSA.
