A superb photo taken of Lou Gehrig at the end of the 1938 season. Though his numbers and power were a bit off from his previous seasons, Gehrig still hit 29 home runs and helped lead the Yanks to their third consecutive pennant. He would go on to hit .286 as New York swept Chicago in the World Series. This would prove to be Gehrigs last great season as the 1939 season found him coping with the rapid onset of the disease that would later bear his name. The Wide World Pictures photographer captures the Yankees legend as he stands at the plate, resplendent in his home white pinstripes with Yankee Stadium as the backdrop. The photo shows some surface scuffs and abrasions from production use along with a crease in the middle of the left side border that extends into the print but not into Gehrigs image. The reverse shows toning throughout along with the World Wide Pictures stamp, handwritten notations, and an “Oct 1938 date stamp. The remains of the original caption slug are present as well as a piece of clear adhesive tape. The photograph measures 7 x 8 3/4 and has been encapsulated and graded a Type 1 by PSA.
