While history remembers the great Babe Ruth for baseball, the Bambino was also an avid pursuer of other sports such as boxing, fly fishing, golf, and, as this photograph shows, hunting. The Babe often spent the winter traveling around the United States and Canada on hunting expeditions, often accompanied by other famous characters. This often reproduced photo shows the Babe along with radio personality and Brooklyn Dodgers play-by-play announcer Bob Edge and fellow hunter Jack Mathews on their 1935 hunting trip to Nova Scotia.. The trio is posed with their substantial quarry, including a formidable black bear and imposing moose. Bob Edge later authored an article about hunting with the Babe for Outdoor Life magazine, writing of his friend, “He’s a snapshooter, as quick as lightning, and he can drill a tomato can at 60 yards.” Measuring 8” x 10,” the front of the photo has pieces missing from the top right and lower left corners, and several creases. The image has a nice sepia tone, and the details are sharp. The reverse of the photo has several notations, including the names of Ruth and his friends depicted on the front, and several pieces of tape present.
