There are no two names in the history of sports that evoke morereverence than Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig. Their legends have reachedmythical proportions and their faces are woven into the tapestry ofAmerican history. Thus, their stature in the realm of sports memorabiliais similarly unparalleled. Offered here is a spectacular example of oneof the most sought after collectibles in the hobby.
This red-and-blue stitched Official American League (Barnard)baseball dates to the 1929-1931 manufacturing period. The form andcharacteristics of the autographs it bears suggest it was signed towardsthe earlier side of that span. Ruth, as usual, has commanded the sweetspot, with Gehrig owning the west panel. Both signatures appear to berendered in the same black ink. In spite of some small areas of chippingto the first names of both signatures, the equally dark pennings aredramatically bold in their presentation. Ideal placement makes the twoautographs partially visible from a single vantage point. The ball hastoned to a light brownish color under a moderate coat of shellac, butshows no significant structural flaws.
