Babe Ruth's memorable barnstorming tours in the 1920s and early 30s did more than just fill his wallet; they gave lower and middle class fans in Middle America a chance to see the Great Bambino in person. Arranged by his crafty agent Christy Walsh these off-season exhibition games brought Babe to minor league ballparks where his "Bustin' Babes" would square off against Lou Gehrig's "Larrupin' Lous." At least one of these tours went through Milwaukee WI circa 1928-31 where the two teams played at Borchert Field longtime home of the Milwaukee Brewers (AA) among others. Legend has it that the Sultan of Swat hit one of his longest home runs at this park in 1928. (Uploaded image shows Ruth on the field that same year.)
Presented here is a baseball signed by Ruth Walsh and three others that was procured in Milwaukee during one of these tours by our consignor's father. The Babe's autograph blesses the sweet spot naturally in 6-7/10 black ink. Will Rogers the famous actor who starred in dozens of Westerns in the 1920s and 30s has also signed the well-soiled and moderately scuffed "College League" ball made of genuine horsehide with red and blue stitching. A signature spelling "Lou Gehrig" has been deemed secretarial by PSA/DNA. The consignor whose father passed away years ago cannot confirm whether Ruth signed at the ballpark or at the hotel where perhaps he Walsh and Rogers were staying. The north panel holds the notation "Ambassador Hotel Oct. 11 1931" (in unknown hand) one of the oldest hotels in Milwaukee still operating today. A fantastic memento from one of the Babe's tours that made him larger than life to so many Americans. Includes LOA from PSA/DNA (AG01605).
