The offered piece was among a small number of similarly crafted items presented to honored guests at the All-America Football Dinner held by Christy Walsh at the Hotel Commodore New York on Nov. 30 1925." The event was held by Walsh “In Appreciation to my Newspaper Friends and in Honor of Knute Rockne Tad Jones Glenn Warner Fielding Yost and my Other Associates.”
The charmingly crafted humidor built from an actual Spalding Official Collegiate football bears the black ink signatures of three of the legendary football pioneers honored at the event; Knute Rockne Tad Jones and Glenn “pop” Warner. Each has added his college name at the end of his autograph as follows "Glenn Warner – Stanford” “Knute Rockne - Notre Dame" and "Tad Jones – Yale." Jone who may not have the name recognition of his two compatriots was a dominant All-American quarterback with Yale from 1905 through 1907 leading the Bulldogs to 28 wins and two ties in 30 games. Surely it was due to this dominance that he was ask to share this football's side panel with these titans of the sport. He later coached at Yale for nine seasons -- compiling a record of 60 wins with a mere 15 loses and four ties. Unfortunately the signatures on the piece are only faintly visible and the leather exhibits heavy wear throughout with only the "T" remaining in the Jones exemplar. The signatures of Warner and Rockne each rate about 2-3/10. The base of the humidor displays an attractive engraved plaque reading "Jos. A. Mulcahy Compliments of Christy Walsh". Few significant relics from this golden age of the gridiron exist in today’s marketplace with the offered item demonstrating the highest levels of both craftsmanship and historical relevance.
