A breathtaking action shot that features the two best first basemen in the American League: Lou Gehrig and George Sisler. Sisler won an MVP Award and led the AL in batting twice during the first half of the 1920s while Gehrig dominated the second, winning his own MVP Award and two World Series Championships. The action in this photo takes place in St. Louis’ Sportsman’s Park and captures Sisler sliding feet-first back into first, where Gehrig stands ready with the tag. The cloud of dirt and the intensity of Sisler’s face really make this one of the finest action shots from the 1920s. That it depicts the two best first basemen in the American League makes this piece all the more desirable. The photo has been printed to its edges. The image has excellent contrast and a warm sepia tone throughout. The reverse features “Gehrig & Sisler” along with the number “2” handwritten in pencil. An amazing live-action image from baseball’s greatest era. The photo has been encapsulated by PSA and graded a Type 1 Authentic.
