Los Angeles-born Anna May Wong was Hollywood’s first Chinese American film star. Beginning her career in the silent film days, Wong effortlessly made the transition to talkies and starred alongside Douglas Fairbanks, Marlene Dietrich, Lon Chaney, and Myrna Loy. In addition to the silver screen, Wong was celebrated for her trend-setting fashion sense, embracing the “flapper” look, and was voted 1934’s "world's best dressed woman." This incredible Type 1 photograph was taken by renowned artist Walter Fredrick Seely in the early 1920s. The actress is both alluring and mysterious in this classic silent-era pose, dressed in traditional Chinese silk garments. The photo has been printed to its edges, and has some very light wear along its edges. The image has taken on a warm sepia tone from age, which adds to the beauty of the subject.
