During his 16-year MLB career (1915-30), George Sisler rivaled Rogers Hornsby as baseball's premier hitter, winning two batting titles in which he hit over .400 both years and leading the American League in hits, triples and stolen bases multiple times. In 1920, he batted .408 and set an MLB record with 257 hits, which stood for over 80 years until Ichiro broke it in 2004. Then, in 1922, the St. Louis Browns star put together arguably the greatest individual all-around season in baseball history to take home A.L. MVP honors. Sisler batted .420, hit safely in a then-record 41 consecutive games, led the league in hits (246), stolen bases (51), and triples (18), all while being the game's best fielding first baseman. Like Babe Ruth, he entered the majors as a lefthanded pitcher. And like Ruth, his batting prowess was simply too good to be restricted to a pitcher's schedule. In 1939, the man nicknamed "Gorgeous George" was elected into the Hall of Fame as one of baseball's "Original Eleven" inaugural inductees along with Ruth, Cobb, Wagner, etc.

This excellent original action shot captures Sisler in his full St. Louis Browns uni reaching up to snare a high throw at first base. The timing and clarity are pinpoint and it's no wonder such professional photography was done by the Brown Brothers, America's first stock photo agency formed in New York City in 1904 by Arthur and Charles Brown. Multiple Brown Brothers stamps and notations appear on the reverse. Aside from the top left corner, there are no condition issues. (The white marks appears to be rain drops falling from the sky that became white streaks during the black & white print development.)
