Presented here is an early team photo of the dominant Boston Red Sox pitching staff of the late 1910's featuring a young Babe Ruth. The 5" by 8" photo appears to date to 1916 or 1917 based on the players we have done our best to identify in the image. Making up the starting staff in those two seasons were (from left to right): Carl Mays, Rube Foster, Ernie Shore, Ruth, and Dutch Leonard. Each player is sporting his Boston Red Sox uniform and team jacket. The five Red Sox starters combined to go 89-55 in 1916 as Boston went on to win the World Series. Foster had the fewest wins (14) and highest ERA (3.06). Babe led the staff in virtually every category including wins (23), innings (323), ERA (1.75), strikeouts (170), complete games (23) and shutouts (9). In 1917, Ruth had 24 wins and sported a 2.01 ERA. The lovely landscape-oriented photograph was produced off a duplicate negative in the 1940's and has been deemed Type IV by PSA/DNA. Comes encapsulated in a jumbo holder.
