James J. Jeffries was an American professional boxer and former World Heavyweight Champion. Known for his enormous strength and stamina Jeffries was a natural left-hander and possessed one-punch knockout power with his powerful left hook. On June 9 1899 in Brooklyn New York he defeated Bob Fitzsimmons by knockout to win the World Heavyweight Championship. That August he embarked on a tour of Europe putting on exhibition fights for fans. He retained the heavyweight title until August 1904 when he retired undefeated. Jeffries finished his professional boxing career with 19 wins (14 by knockout). His only loss was when he came out of retirement in 1910 for "The Fight of the Century" against the great Jack Johnson.

These ancient circa 1900 boxing shoes were fight-worn by James J. Jeffries and donated by Jeffries himself to the Helms Athletic Foundation museum. Jeffries was a longtime friend to HAF founders Bill Schroeder and Paul Helms and a frequent visitor to the museum. He was a recipient of many Helms awards and was a member of the Helms Hall of Fame. The pair of Spalding brand ivory-colored high-top kidskin shoes with lace-up fronts and soft soles come in size 10 1/2 E. The A.G. Spalding manufacturer's tags are stitched inside the tongues. The outside of the right shoes are the faint remains of a self-adhesive label the words "BOXING ________ WORN BY JAMES JEFFRIES WORLD CHAMPION" still legible. Amazingly the original laces and thin canvas-like insoles are still intact after over 100 years. Somehow these classic boxing shoes worn by the world's first heavyweight legend remain in Ex-Mt condition.

Includes Letter of Provenance from Helms Athletic Foundation/LA84 Collection.
