Bret Saberhagen was presented with this prestigious award after overcoming a serious shoulder injury that had threatened his career. The Tony Conigliaro Award is a national award instituted in 1990 by the Boston Red Sox to honor the memory of their former star Tony Conigliaro. It is given annually to a Major League Baseball player who best overcomes an obstacle and adversity through the attributes of spirit determination and courage that were trademarks of Conigliaro. An 11-inch high acrylic section with a "Tony Conigliaro Award" gold emblem near the top rests on a 7-inch-square and 5-inch high wooden base directly alongside a 4 1/2-inch high waist-up bust of Conigliaro holding a bat. A metal nameplate bears Saberhagen's name "Boston Red Sox" and "1998" in raised letters. Mostl elements of the piece appear to be in essentially as-issued and problem-free condition but the metal bat held by the Conigliaro figure has broken off. Saberhagen signed with a bold black Sharpie on the back wooden panel of the base. Comes with a Letter of Authenticity from Bret Saberhagen.Pre-certified by PSA/DNA.
