A mere four years after winning his first Cy Young Award Bret Saberhagen firmly established himselfas one of the great hurlers of his generation earning a second Cy Young highlighted by individualstats that somehow represented uniform improvement over those of his first in 1985. Seeming to lead theAmerican League in just about everything short of restaurants visited Saberhagen put up career highs inwins (23) ERA (2.16) and strikeouts (193) while also topping the Junior Circuit in complete games (12) andinnings pitched (262 1/3). This iconic Balfour-designed award consists of a visually striking silver-plateddesign mounted on a black-lacquered wooden plaque measuring 13 1/2-by-16 inches. The centerpieceof the near 11-pound award is a lifelike sculpted pitchers hand sprouting from the mound of a baseballdiamond and clutching a ball with a two-fingered grip. Relief lettering above and below reads CY YOUNGAWARD and PRESENTED TO BRET SABERHAGEN - THE OUTSTANDING AMERICAN LEAGUE PITCHER1989. The design elements and the plaque backing are extremely well preserved and highly presentable;there are virtually no scratches on the condition- sensitive polished black surface nor any scuffing on theedges of the plaque. Saberhagen has signed in bold black Sharpie on the back of the plaque. One of themost prestigious baseball awards of the modern-era from one of the most prolific figures in Kansas CityRoyals history.
