Offered here is a lovely pair of commemorative medals honoring Jean-Marie Faustin Godefroid "João" de Havelange for his 25 years of service as FIFA President (1974-98). The seventh president of football's world governing body, João Havelange held the esteemed position for the second-longest term behind the legendary Jules Rimet, and he remains the only non-European president of FIFA. Havelange was a Brazilian businessman, lawyer, and athlete who competed as a swimmer at the 1936 Berlin Olympics and was a member of Brazil's water polo team at the 1952 Helsinki Summer Games. He passed away in 2016 at the age of 100.
Issued by the Brazilian Football Confederation, the two medals are identical in design, a large and smaller version shaped like the sun and gold-plated with Brazil-themed green and yellow ribbons. One side has the CBF logo with his name inscribed at the bottom. The other side shows a map of Brazil with images of the five World Cup trophies won by the world's greatest football/soccer nation. The larger medal is 2" (50 mm) in diameter for the circular portion, extending to 3.5" (85 mm) in diameter with the pointed angles. The smaller medal is 1" (25 mm) at its longest. Both medals remain in nearly pristine condition housed side-by-side in a navy blue velvet presentation box (5.75" by 8.75").
