Between 1923 and 1930 Bobby Jones won 13 Major Championships including the Grand Slam in 1930 (when the U.S. and British Amateur Championships counted as majors.) The child prodigy from Georgia learned to control his temper on the course and became a stylish and refined gentleman of the game known for his gracious display of sportsmanship. He competed only as an amateur and retired from full-time competitive golf in 1930 at just 28 years old. One can argue that nobody not even Tiger Woods has ever dominated the men's game like Bobby did during that 8-year stretch. Perhaps his greatest contributions to the game occurred after he retired. Jones co-designed the Augusta National course and helped found the Masters tournament which began in 1934. He played in the Masters every year through 1948. Outside of golf Jones was a well-educated man with degrees from Georgia Tech Harvard and Emory and worked as an attorney for his father's firm. Sadly Jones' health deteriorated starting in the late 1940's and he was confined to a wheelchair in the years leading up to his death in 1971.
Presented here is Bobby Jones' very own specially designed A.G. Spalding 'Cash-In' Putter (Patented Des. 123260) and A.G. Spalding 'Dynamiter' Wedge. In the early 1930's Jones worked with A.G. Spalding & Co. to develop the first set of steel-shafted clubs which immediately became top sellers and are still considered among the best-designed sets ever made. Each club face shows heavy use particularly the putter as the brand engravings are difficult to read. Both have beige colored Pyratone-sheathed steel shafts. The putter has a dark brown long molded leather grip in excellent condition with small diamond-shaped indentations for better hold. The wedge has a black leather grip and is in very good condition. The clubs originated from the Zaharias Estate; the consignor obtained them directly from the Babe & George Zaharias Golf Foundation in Tampa Florida.
Includes a Letter of Authenticity from Babe Zaharias' former caddie Hal Shaw who also runs the foundation. A tag strung to the putter indicates that Bobby gifted Babe this club at the Titleholder's Championship in Augusta GA. Babe won the tournament in 1947 1950 and 1952 and was runner-up in 1949. It is unknown when the wedge was gifted. According to Shaw these gifts were a token of their friendship and dual admiration. Babe was a superior athlete to all of her opponents but there's no question that having a mentor like the great Bobby Jones was a tremendous boost to the 10 majors and 82 tournaments (amateur & pro combined) she captured in her golf career.
