Former Cincinnati Reds star Pete Rose may still be banned from the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown New York but his name remains atop baseballs all-time hit list. The burly infielder who played with reckless abandonment for his entire 24-year career surpassed the great Ty Cobb on baseballs all-time hit list by collecting his 4190th hit yet another single on September 11 1985 at Riverfront Stadium in Cincinnati. For Rose it was just another milestone in a career filled with them.

A native of Cincinnati Rose broke into the big leagues in 1963 playing second base for his hometown team. An immediate fan favorite Rose batted .273 after collecting 170 hits and 13 stolen bases in his inaugural campaign and was named the National Leagues Rookie of the Year. Quickly nicknamed Charlie Hustle by virtue of his relentless efforts out on the field Rose kept up his prolific hitting by averaging 204 hits per season from 1965 to 1979.

This lot features Roses 4255th career hit baseball the second to last of his jaw-dropping career total. The ONL (Feeney) baseball shows good game usage and natural toning throughout. The actual hit occurred in the bottom of the fifth inning when Rose lined an RBI single off San Francisco right-hander Kelly Downs to centerfield. Rose went 3-for-4 on the day and the Reds won the game 2-0. Rose signed the baseball in blue ink on the west panel although his signature has faded considerably. His additional notation Hit # 4255 added to the east panel appears more vibrant. Below the area where Pete wrote the hit number is his very faint inscription Single off Kelly Downs 8-14-86. A very significant piece of sports history commemorating the all-time hit kings second-to-last hit. A photocopy of an October 7 1987 Rose signed LOA on Reds letterhead accompanies the ball.

Additional full LOA from PSA/DNA.
