In 1939 the Bureau of Engraving and Printing issued a three-cent "Centennial of Baseball" stamp to commemorate the 100-year anniversary of the beginning of baseball. The stamp was issued in conjunction with the opening of the Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum in upstate Cooperstown New York. The first five players elected to the Hall of Fame were Ty Cobb Babe Ruth Honus Wagner Christy Mathewson and Walter Johnson. Franklin D Roosevelt was the U.S. President while the Hall of Fame was being established. During his time in office Roosevelt often purchased full sheets and made First Day Cover for new stamps. He frequently autographed the sheets and covers and got people connected to the topic to autograph whenever he could. At the opening of the ceremonies of the Hall of fame Postmaster General James Farley asked many of the ballplayers to sign DFR's sheet before presenting it to the President.
Offered here is a specially preserved Babe Ruth signed 1939 Centennial of Baseball postage stamp presented in a framed and matted display paired with a beautiful sepia-tone portrait photo of seated Ruth in a suit. The overall framed item measures 13" wide by 16" high; the photo measures 7" wide by 9" high; and the Centennial of Baseball stamp that Ruth has autographed measures 1.5" wide by one-inch high. A significant period piece celebrating the opening of Cooperstown.
Includes LOA from the Ruth Family. Full LOA from PSA/DNA.
