Babe Ruth the "Sultan of Swat" launched 714 round-trippers during his Hall of Fame baseball career. A native of Baltimore Maryland Ruth played for both the Boston Red Sox (1914-19) and New York Yankees (1920-1934) during his illustrious tenure before closing out his MLB stint with a single season in 1935 with the then-Boston Braves.
Featured here is a Babe Ruth single-signed official Pacific Coast League (PCL) baseball adorned with the PCL stamp and some very prominent inscription writing in someone else's hand in a completely different colored ink. Ruth as it turns out never played in the PCL as he spent his lone minor league split between the Baltimore Orioles (AA) and the Providence Grays (AA) of the International League. However in 1924 Ruth and Yankee teammate Bob Meusel toured California following the season. "Barnstorming" as it was called in the day had been outlawed by MLB Commissioner Kenesaw Mountain Landis but The Babe never relented and toured the West Coast in October of '24 and even the Far East in subsequent years. The Babe's autograph is in black ink on the sweet spot and is clear and legible.
On the two side panels of the baseball are two different inscriptions. The inscription to the right of Ruth's signature reads "DIED To-Day Aug. 16 48" while the rather lengthy and barely legible inscription to the left of Ruth's autograph appears to read: "May 2 1948 at Gilmore Park Hollywood - Portland Rhodes and Myself - This is Ruth's sig."
