Two legendary figures from the game of baseball two spectacular autographs and one sensational photograph in common. Remarkably these items were found by our consignor John DeMatties eight years apart and reunited like two long lost brothers. The extraordinary image that each piece has in common shows active-duty Marine Corps pilot Ted Williams lighting Babe Ruth's cigar. The photo was taken during World War II during Williams' first active-duty tenure. The photo at left is a First-Generation classic likely from newspaper files. In the white bottom border of this First-Generation photo Williams added his elegant bold blue sharpie autograph (9/10). Matted alongside it at right is a published version of the same image from a magazine. This one bears a magnificent Babe Ruth signature in jet black fountain pen (9/10). Ironically DeMatties purchased the Ruth signed piece eight years prior to locating its Williams signed brethren yet varying market conditions warranted a price for the Williams roughly equal to that of the Ruth piece. The combination is likely impossible to duplicate. The pair is matted and framed to an overall dimension of 22 1/2-by-15 inches.
Includes a full LOA from PSA/DNA for Ruth-signed image. Total piece pre-certified by PSA/DNA.
