In the late 1920's and 30’s before the days of winter league baseball in South America major league players did a number of things to earn extra money in the off season. Even the great Babe Ruth the game’s most prolific earner was no exception. Ruth his sidekick Lou Gehrig and a number of other professional stars barnstormed throughout the country to the great pleasure of fans in towns without Major League franchises who may never otherwise witness their diamond exploits.

According to our consignor the origin of the offered baseball traces back to a Ruth/Gehrig led barnstorming stop in Denver Colorado in 1932. According to family lore the ball was used in a game between the star studded traveling team and the local Denver Bears and was actually hit by Ruth.  The ball was signed by Ruth and Gehrig and acquired by the owner of the Denver Dry Goods company which is reportedly still in existence.   He gave it to our consignor’s grandfather and it has remained in her family since.

This black and red stitched Spalding baseball is well toned throughout and shows scuffing and abrasions from use and handling. The presentation quality of Ruth’s sweet spot signature is unaffected by any such faults and projects at 7/10 in strength.  Gehrig’s autograph on the south panel is similarly bold (6-7/10) but has been partially enhanced on the large “G” and small “g” at some point in the past.  The ball has a light coat of shellac but retains great vintage character.
