In addition to the many medals and documents in this collection are dozens of fascinating original photographs depicting Luz Long doing what he did best: competing in either the long jump or the triple jump. They come directly from the Long family and several were submitted to PSA/DNA for Type I authentication. Offered here is a wonderful action shot perfectly capturing the German track star mid-flight during one of his broad jump attempts at the 1936 Berlin Olympics. Since the trials and finals of Men’s Long Jump occurred on the same day, we can accurately date this photo to August 4, 1936, when Luz finished as the runner-up to Jesse Owens and won the silver medal in a most honorable fashion.
It is important that we note that Long was not doing the infamous “Heil Hitler” salute during the jump; rather, this was a common broad-jump style utilized by many non-German long jumpers in that era. Hands and fingers were often pointed outward to improve aerodynamics. (Furthermore, the salute was done with the right arm.)
The photo was taken by German photographer Arthur Grimm as part of the filming of Leni Riefenstahl’s acclaimed Olympia. Released in 1938, the two-part sports documentary about the 1936 Berlin Games is both renowned for its incredible advancements in the art of filmmaking and notorious for the Nazi propaganda that it sought to spread. Hitler hand-picked 34-year-old Leni Reifenstahl to direct a film that properly documented his Olympics, one that captured the best moments and highlights so that the world would know what a great host he was. Olympia is considered one of the greatest films ever (Time's top 100 list) and made Riefenstahl famous at home and abroad, her work becoming a major influence in modern sports photography and filmmaking.
The Olympia-Film stamp on the reverse credits it to Arthur Grimm. There are several handwritten editorial notes on the back. The landscape photo measures approximately 7” by 9” (17.5 x 23.5 cm) and comes in terrific condition overall. It comes encapsulated in a PSA/DNA Type I jumbo holder with a separate letter from PSA/DNA noting the pedigree from the Luz Long Collection.
