Here is a remarkable piece of football history: a match jersey from the 1978 FIFA World All-Star Game, pitting a "World XI" squad against the New York Cosmos, worn by Brazilian international Oscar Bernardi. Played on August 30th at Giants Stadium in East Rutherford, NJ ("The Meadowlands"), this highly anticipated exhibition match ended in a 2-2 draw before a crowd of 70,000. Johan Cruyff briefly came out of retirement to play for the Cosmos side. Oscar started at center-back for the World XI and this shirt comes from his personal collection.
The long-sleeve jersey is constructed in royal blue cotton twill with a white V-neck collar and white ribbed cuffs on the sleeve ends trimmed with a thin blue stripe. The left chest bears three embroidered gold stars across from the World All Stars crest — a stylized football globe design in white and gold embroidery with "WORLD ALL STARS" lettering beneath. The front left sleeve displays a white "2" numeral outlined in yellow gold. The reverse carries applied white block lettering spelling "OSCAR" above a white "2" with yellow gold outline.
Properly tagged by Athleta within the collar, the shirt displays appropriate single-match wear with light soiling, puckering and fraying, plus a small tear on the right side of the tail. The matchup against the Cosmos, featuring Franz Beckenbauer, Carlos Alberto and Cruyff, makes this an extraordinary piece of football history.
The Oscar Bernardi Collection
This shirt comes from the personal collection of José Oscar Bernardi, better known as Oscar, who played central defender for the Brazil National Team from 1977 to 1986. Included is a letter of provenance signed by Oscar. Most jerseys in the collection were obtained directly through player swaps after competition. Others were acquired via trade with footballers in Oscar’s wide network of teammates and friends. At age 71, he still resides in Brazil and is ready for his collection to be appreciated by others.
