Presented here is the original August 4 1979 Western Union telegram sent by Muhammad Ali to the Munson family. The telegram contains Ali’s personal condolences regarding Thurman's passing and was read at Munson’s funeral at the direction of Munson’s widow Diana. The message reads as follows "I wish to express my sincere sympathy at this time of your sorrow Thurman Munson was a credit not only to baseball but to the American way of life and a great leader to the children of our country my prayers will be with you deepest sympathy. Muhammad Ali". The sentiment expressed within the offered telegram encapsulates the feeling of loss that enveloped the country after Thurman's death.
