These museum-worthy trunks were worn by "The Greatest" during his controversial 15-round unanimous decision victory over Jimmy Young on April 30 1976 in Landover Maryland. It was Muhammad Ali's second fight following his famous "Thrilla in Manila" win against Joe Frazier. Young a Philadelphia native whose career was at its peak in the mid-70's battled The Champ and took the fight the distance even raising his arms in a preemptive victory pose when the final bell rung. The three judges who would be heavily criticized afterwards saw Ali doing more damage overall and ultimately awarded him the 3-0 decision.
The Everlast trunks are white with black trim. On the front waistband is the "Everlast" manufacturer's tag with "Made Expressly for MUHAMMAD ALI." Around 1972 boxing equipment manufacturer Everlast began to supply Muhammad Ali with specially made equipment produced exclusively for Ali by the company with this special tagging. The only other instance where the equipment giant had previously administered such exclusive labeling was for boxing legend Joe Louis. The white Everlast tag is stained with what appears to be blood. The inner drawstring is intact. The trunks show nice wear with light staining throughout.
Provenance: They are accompanied by a copy of an LOA from Eddie Brown stating that they were obtained directly from Ali in Deerlake Park PA right after the Jimmy Young fight and can be attributed to that fight. An accompanying LOA from Bob Case former VP of the International Boxing Association confirms that Eddie Brown was "best friends" with Ali's then-cornerman Drew "Bundini" Brown. They are also accompanied by an apparent photo-match and an additional LOA from MEARS.
