First and foremost many have stated that April 10, 1947 is the most important date in Dodger history with some saying MLB history. As widely known the Dodgers front office that day announced that the club had purchased the contract of Jackie Robinson, making him the first African American in the Major Leagues to break the color barrier. After a tremendous showing during spring training in 1947, it was obvious to the Dodgers that Jackie Robinson belonged in the major leagues and what better way to do it while playing at Ebbets Field on that historic day.
This photograph captures Robinson in his Montreal Royals uniform displaying the confidence that would carry him through the trying days ahead while focused and ready for everything. This image has become arguably the most well-known image of Robinson from his Montreal days and was used for his 1947 Bond Bread rookie card making it all the more desirable. The image measures 7 x 9 and has been printed to the edges. With the exception of some very minor wear in the upper left corner of the photo everything else presents in near mint condition. With this only being noted for the sake of accuracy, the composition and clarity are nearly perfect. The reverse of the photograph has a “JUN 1948” date stamp and a large International News Photo stamp. “Jackie Robinson” has been handwritten in pencil and there are various light marks from production use. Everything from condition to incredible relevance about this image is simply outstanding!
Another side note to add to this day for more historical data, this was the first day Jackie Robinson ever put on his coveted first ever MLB uniform. He would change after the game in into his new Brooklyn Dodger uniform. The photograph has been encapsulated and graded Type 1 Authentic by PSA.
