A decade after losing the battle for the title of New York’s most popular baseball team to the Yankees the Giants came roaring back in 1936 with one of their strongest clubs ever. Pitchers Carl Hubbell Hal Schumacher and Cliff Melton gave the Giants one of the best starting rotations in either league and veterans Bill Terry and Wally Berger teamed up with youngsters Hank Leiber and Harry Danning to give the team a potent lineup of hard-hitting bats. The team won back-to-back pennants in 1936-1937 and remained among the top-tier of National League teams through the end of the decade.
This group contains 57 striking portraits of the 1936-1939 New York Giants players taken by famed Chicago photographer George Burke. One of the Giants players had the presence of mind to have his teammates sign the 5x7s for his collection and some of the photos bear personalized messages. This lot of 52 signed photos includes Hall of Famers Carl Hubbell (2) Bill Terry and Travis Jackson plus Wally Berger Hank Leiber Al Smith Sam Leslie Don Brennan Jimmie Ripple Lou Chiozza Harry Danning (2) Hal Schumacher (2) Zeke Bonura Alex Kampouris Harry Gumbert (3) Tom Baker Frank Snyder (2) Frank Mancuso Gus Mancuso Frank Scalzi Tom Hafey Bob Seeds Walter Brown Red Lynn Johnny McCarthy (2) Cliff Melton (2) Bill Lohrman Dick Coffman (2) Manny Salvo Bill Jurges Joe Moore (2) Burgess Whitehead (2-1 signed Lefty and 1 signed Burgess) Ken O’Dea Frank Demaree Dolf Luque Mickey Haslin Eddie Madjeski Blondy Ryan Dick Bartell and trainer William Schaeffer.
