On December 2, 1930, Einstein, accompanied by his wife Elsa, embarked on the SS Belgenland in Antwerp for the voyage through the Panama Canal to California. The physicist spent most of his time on board working in his cabin, with stewards later reporting that they had emptied many trash cans of notes and formulas discarded by Einstein. He did, however, take time away from work to try out the ship’s experimental radiotelephone. This photograph shows Albert and Elsa as they broadcast a Christmas greeting to North America via the Western Electric and ABC Radio networks. The physicist spoke in German, and Elsa translated the message into English. The Type 1 photo shows some wear to its white borders. The image is crisp and has taken on a warm sepia tone with age. The reverse of the photo has the Underwood & Underwood credit stamp along with a plethora of handwritten notations, credit stamps, and the original paper caption slug. The photo has been encapsulated by PSA and graded a Type 1 Authentic.
