Two very famous American astronauts Gus Grissom and Alan Sheppard were both members of the original NASA Project Mercury. Sheppard in fact became in 1961 just the second person and the first American to travel into space. Ten years later at age 47 Sheppard commanded the Apollo 14 mission piloting the lander to the most accurate landing of the Apollo missions. He became the fifth and oldest person to walk on the Moon and the only astronaut of the Mercury Seven to walk on the Moon. Grissom meanwhile was killed along with fellow astronauts Ed White and Roger Chaffee during a pre-launch test for the Apollo 1 mission at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in 1967. He was just 40 years old. Both astronauts signed this official National League (Giles) baseball with Grissom adding a personalized inscription to Moose Skowron: To Moose with best regards Gus Grissom PU 50. The latter part of the inscription pertains to the fact that Grissom attend Purdue University from which he graduated in 1950. Grissoms signature appears to be quite faded in what was originally black ink while Sheppards autograph in blue ink is still holding pretty strong. Neither astronaut signed on the sweet spot.
