The Leon Spinks vs. Muhammad Ali rematch was billed as the "Battle of New Orleans" and took place at the Superdome on September 15, 1978. Seven months after losing to Spinks via split decision, Ali got sweet revenge against the 1976 Olympic champion, winning via unanimous decision to regain the WBA heavyweight title belt. In doing so, Ali became the first three-time World Heavyweight Champion.
A record 63,352 attendance at the Superdome was the largest ever for an indoor boxing match. Ticket sales of $4.8 million ($20.2 million in 2021 dollars) was the highest live gate for any sporting event at the time. The average ticket price was $75.87. 90 million television viewers watched the main event in the United States, with a remarkable 46.7% of TV sets tuned in. The worldwide TV audience was estimated at 2 billion viewers, just shy of half the planet.
This offered ticket stub from the famous fight is special enough as it is. What makes it truly one-of-a-kind is the fact that no other known example holds Muhammad Ali's autograph. The black ballpoint signature dates to the period based on its style. The torn stub has been graded EX 5 by PSA. Other similarly torn stubs indicate this is how the Superdome gate staff checked in ticketed attendees that evening. The PSA/DNA authenticated autograph appears 8.5/10 in strength and eye appeal. To reiterate, there are 27 unsigned stubs in the PSA pop report, but this is the only autographed version.
