On July 7, 1937, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt was on hand for the fifth edition of the Midsummer Classic, throwing out the ceremonial first pitch at Griffith Stadium, home of the Washington Senators. The American League easily won the first All-Star Game played in Washington D.C. by a score of 8-3 on the back of a home run and four RBIs from Lou Gehrig. Featured here is a timely black and white original photograph of the Iron Horse crossing home plate after his two-run dinger off Dizzy Dean in the third inning knocked in Yankee teammate Joe DiMaggio (pictured in his No. 3 jersey) to give the A.L. an early 2-0 lead. It marked Gehrig's second All-Star Game homer in his fifth appearance, and it would be his last as did not go deep in his final two exhibition appearances.

The photo has a crystal clear image of Gehrig with a sheepish grin on his face as he crosses home plate and DiMaggio waits to greet him. Crease-free with clean borders, sharp corners and smooth edges, the flawless photo of this notable baseball moment is captioned by ACME Newspictures on the reverse with a dated press stamp from N.E.A.
