The New York Yankees set many team records during their glorious 1927 campaign that many argue was the greatest season by any team in sports history. After going 110-44 (wins record) during the regular season and taking the American League pennant by a landslide, the Bronx Bombers capped it off with a World Series sweep of the Pittsburgh Pirates. “Murderer’s Row” was led by Babe Ruth’s record-setting 60 home runs, Lou Gehrig’s .373 batting average and 173 RBI, and tremendous seasons from Earle Combs (231 hits & 23 triples), Tony Lazzeri (18 HR, 102 RBI, 22 SB) and Bob Meusel (103 RBI & 24 SB). A dominant starting staff of Waite Hoyt, Herb Pennock and Urban Shocker was anchored by star reliever Wilcy Moore who went 19-7 with an AL-leading 2.28 ERA and 13 saves.
On July 18, the Yanks played the St. Louis Browns at Sportsman’s Park. Presented here is the official scorecard from that game signed by Ruth, Gehrig and Lazzeri. The Bombers exploded for nine runs in the final three frames to win by a score of 10-6. Gehrig hit his 31st home run of the season, a three-run shot in the eighth inning. Combs, Meusel, Koenig and Julie Wera had two hits apiece, while Lazzeri drove in two and scored a pair. The Bambino was quiet that day, going 1-for-4. On the mound, George Pipgras went the distance, having no trouble until the ninth when he allowed five runs. The reported attendance that Monday afternoon was 22,427. Only was lucky enough to get his scorecard signed by the three most feared members of Murderer’s Row.
The pencil autographs still resonate well on the lineups page rating 8/10 overall in strength. The Babe has signed vertically along the Yankees batting order, with Gehrig horizontally adjacent to his name. Lazzeri signed along the lower right edge. The four-page scorecard on thick stock displays ample wear, yet it has aged well and remains well-preserved. Anything from the Yankees’ legendary 1927 season is heavily coveted among collectors, and this wonderful relic certainly qualifies. Includes full LOA from PSA/DNA.
