In 1994 Brazil won the FIFA World Cup played in the U.S. by beating Italy in the Finals in a penalty shootout. As always the Brazilians were stacked with talent during that era led by star forwards Romario and Bebeto along with Roberto Carlos Jorginho Mauro Silva and Paulo Sergio to name a few. Two years after winning the world's biggest sporting event Brazil was asked to participate in a friendly against the FIFA World Stars at Giants Stadium in East Rutherford NJ. A record crowd of 78416 -- then the largest crowd ever at Giants Stadium -- saw the Brazilian under-23 Olympic Team win a thrilling match by the score of 2-1 over a FIFA World All Stars squad drawn from 14 different countries. After Bebeto's goal in the first half Roberto Carlos notched the game-winner in the 78th minute.
Featured here is a lovely medal commemorating this memorable match on U.S. soil in 1996. Each Brazilian player coach and important staff member received one of these medals. The obverse has "FIFA WORLD STARS VS BRAZIL WORLD CHAMPIONS 1994 GIANTS STADIUM 14TH JULY 1996" in raised text with a tiny stamp of the maker at the bottom. The reverse has "FIFA" in raised letters along with two soccer balls depicting earth's atlas. The medal (diameter 50 mm; weight 56 g) seems to be made of high-quality silver or bronze with gold-plating. The rare medal made specifically for one match presents essentially Mint. Includes LOA from Brazil National Team's technical coordinator.
